
Schoolstart Game Jam
About
This is a game me and four more people made for a Game Jam held at the school to kickstart our game making ambitions. The game is about throwing a CD into the trash bin stationed at the end of the level.

In order to make it there the player has to bypass several obstacles. There is also a timer that challenges the player to beat their friends and/or previous best.

The theme of the Game Jam was "Legend" which is why a League of Legends CD got the honor to represent our player piece.

Player
The player uses her mouse to skip the CD through the air forward. Simply hold M1 down, then drag up, or down, and release to apply speed and momentum forward and upward/downward relative to the force of your drag action.
If the CD touch the floor at any point the player has to start over, but she can also force a restart by pressing space-bar.

If the CD hit any furniture or obstacle the player will lose control of the CD for a brief moment.

Level Design
To begin with the game was intended to be very different. Instead of having one long level we had the intent of having small rooms and the player had to hit the target with just one curved throw. Like throwing a curved ball in Pokémon Go, but instead of curving for a greater chance to capture a Pokémon you need to curve the CD to go around obstacles. However, the code did not work out the way we thought it would and by accident we got the current behaviour instead, which we liked a lot more.

So we threw out all those block outs and I got started on this instead. The level is not very long but it offers a couple of different challenges nonetheless.

To begin with the player have a smooth, straight and open area that leads towards two bookshelves.
Being the first obstacle on the course it is fairly basic going around with a bit of a surprise tipped over bookshelf the player have to go under.

Once the player have that part beat comes the part of the map where the player get some choice of where to go.

The easiest and most obvious way is to the left of the TV where there is a rather big opening.
The second option is a rather big opening in the TV-furniture. While that path is a little bit more tricky to hit due to its placement, it is also faster than the left side.
The third, fastest but also most difficult passage is a small opening between the TV and the furniture on the right side. You can not see it on the picture though because of the chair.

When the player get around the TV there is a bit of an opening to regain control. A bit further ahead is a desk the player will have to go over, or under, and then find their way through the window that leads into the back alley, where the trash bin is located. Fun fact, the tower of cans can be knocked down.

This desk also har a radio which is the source of the music the player can hear playing in the background.

The only thing that remains if the player clear the window is to land the CD inside the bin. This will trigger the lid to close and the timer to stop.
Now all you have to do is beat that time.
